Save America's Treasures Grant Awarded to Lighthouse Kids
On Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Senator Judd Gregg announced from Washington D.C. that he had secured a $250,000.00 Save America's Treasures Grant from the Federal Government towards the preservation and restoration of the White Island Lighthouse. This is a matching type grant so for every dollar that the Lighthouse Kids raise, the federal government will match that dollar up to $250,000.00 On that Wednesday, in April of 2003, the 8th graders of North Hampton School met with Senator Gregg while they were on their Washington DC trip as part of their curriculum. Senator Gregg had high praise for the Lighthouse Kids saying quote "The leadership and vision of the North Hampton Lighthouse Kids, represented by these four in Washington today who have worked so diligently to save the White Island Lighthouse over the past few years, is a really inspiring story," Sen. Gregg said. "These students truly exemplify what can be accomplished when citizens take an active interest in serving their local communities and working in conjunction with public and private organizations to reach their goal." In 1991, when Gregg was Governor, the lighthouse was given back to the state by the Coast Guard and put into care of DRED (Department of Resources and Economic Development). Gregg had been out to the island and seen the beauty of the lighthouse and being the Governor when it was given to DRED, he asked the Save America's Treasures Foundation to appropriate $250,000 toward the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse. Thus far the Lighthouse Kids have raised approximately $198,000. Thanks to all the support of the people who love the lighthouse. Thank you our supporters and thank you Senator Gregg!
