Lighthouse Kids Updates:

April 2007:
The Patriot’s Day ocean storm, wreaked havoc at White Island. The historic Walkway was washed away. The tower which was repaired in 2005 sustained some damage. The new lower window facing north east moved inward about 3 inches on one side. The white parging (thick white limestone based covering) was washed off of the bricks below the window. The foghorn was tipped over and destroyed; the solar panels were washed away. Since White Island Lighthouse Station is an active aid to navigation, it is the United States Coast Guard’s responsibility to repair the solar panels and foghorn.

May 21, 2007: Lighthouse Kids’ First Annual Walkathon.

July 28, 2007: Friends of Lighthouse Kids sponsored a benefit at Lil Langley’s house in North Hampton to support the efforts of Lighthouse Kids. Total funds raised $1159.00.

September to October 2007
: Construction of Marine Railway Underway at White Island!
During the days of the Lighthouse Keepers and the Coast Guard there was a marine railway to aid in landing at White Island at the Isles of Shoals. Although, White Island Lighthouse Station remains an active aid to navigation, no personnel have been required to stay at White Island since the Coast Guard automation of the station in 1986.With no maintenance, the historic railway has been destroyed by ocean storms. Access to White Island in recent years has been reduced to small boat access through surf, with persons jumping into the water and climbing over slippery weed covered rocks. This type of access has not only severely limited people visiting the historic structure; it also makes restoration and maintenance very difficult.
A marine railway will allow small boats or barges to approach railway ties, hook up to a winch and haul the boat or barge above the surf/tide line on to dry land. The State of NH, as owners of the property, has hired Pickering Marine of Portsmouth, NH for the construction project. Lighthouse Kids, a nonprofit organization (www.lighthousekids.org) donated $100,000 to support this project. It is expected that the railway will be completed by mid October. Lighthouse Kids is engaging Ricci Construction of Portsmouth NH to repair the window in the tower. Ricci Construction is the company that repaired the tower in 2005. The windows were replaced at that time.
